Wieliczka Salt Mine is a guided underground visit with two distinct route choices. Choose the route before buying transport from Krakow. The Tourist Route is the usual choice for seeing chambers and St Kinga's Chapel. The Miners' Route involves practical mining tasks. They have different entrances, so a ticket that says only “salt mine” needs a closer look.
Choose the Tourist Route for chambers, salt sculptures and St Kinga's Chapel. Choose the Miners' Route for a more active visit with mining tasks. Book the route and guide language first. Check stairs and access needs before payment, then arrange transport to the correct shaft. A train or transfer ticket alone does not include mine entry.
Wieliczka Salt Mine visit and route overview
The mine's official Tourist Route information describes a guided walk through chambers and galleries. The route includes St Kinga's Chapel. The guide stays with the group; this is not an underground space you can enter and wander around alone. The Miners' Route is a separate visit built around practical tasks.
Pick by what you want to do. If the chapel is your priority, choose the route that includes it. If you want the mining activities, read the Miners' Route rules. A different route is not just another departure time for the same visit. Read our Tourist or Miners' Route comparison before you choose.
Keep the underground visit separate from the full outing. Travel from your room, waiting at entry and the return all take time. The mine's duration is a description of the visit, not the time you will be away from Krakow. Don't book an evening commitment using only the underground tour length.
Official booking and guide rules
Start with the mine's own site. Use its route page to reach the official ticket system, then select the date and guide language you need. Check the ticket category and meeting instructions before payment. Save the ticket so you can read it without a mobile signal.
The Tourist Route practical information says visits always take place with a guide. Buying entry independently means arranging your own booking and transport. It does not mean visiting the route without a guide.
Language and date are part of the choice. A general statement that English tours exist does not establish places on your chosen day. The booking system is the source for that availability. If you buy through a departure seller, check that the stated language refers to the mine guide, rather than only the driver or a host on the ride.
You can compare travel plans in our salt mine tour guide. It explains the difference between a transport-only transfer and a visit package. Keep the official route rules in view whichever seller you use.
Check what the ticket covers before comparing totals. Mine entry, travel and a meal are different items. A departure package may combine some of them. Read the actual inclusion list and ask about anything it leaves unclear. Don't infer entry from a photograph of the chapel.
The mine's practical information says the Tourist Route ticket also admits you to the underground exhibition of the Cracow Saltworks Museum, checked October 2026. Read the current ticket details when you book. Don't treat that as entry to every nearby museum building or another mine route.
Use the final basket total for the people travelling. A headline “from” price may refer to a different category or language. This guide doesn't quote a live booking price because it can't establish the total for your date and group. The official seller's checkout gives you that figure.
Time and preparation
The official route page gives an average Tourist Route visit of 2 to 3 hours, checked October 2026. Treat this as a planning guide, rather than an exact release time. Add travel and entry time before deciding what else to do that day. Leave a gap before a fixed dinner or return train.
Bring comfortable shoes and a layer. The mine publishes an underground temperature of 17 to 18°C for the Tourist Route, checked October 2026. Don't pack only for the weather outside. A warm afternoon in Krakow does not mean the underground walk will feel warm too.
Use a small bag. The official practical page sets a maximum carry-on size of 20 × 20 × 35 cm, checked October 2026. It says larger bags can use storage where suitable space is available, but lockers are limited. Don't arrive with a suitcase expecting a guaranteed locker. Leave large luggage at your accommodation when possible.
Before leaving your room, check:
- The route name and guide language on the ticket.
- The entrance for that route.
- The stated meeting time, not just the tour start.
- Your bag against the current size rule.
- The return options after the visit.
Facilities and physical rules
The ordinary Tourist Route includes about 800 stairs, with 380 at the start, according to the mine's practical page, checked October 2026. Don't read the use of a lift at exit as proof of a stair-free visit. For a fuller explanation, see our salt mine stairs guide.
The mine says some underground areas are adapted for visitors with limited mobility and that prior booking is required. Contact the mine before buying a standard ticket if you need that plan. Describe what you need, including whether you can use stairs. Ask which parts of the route the booked visit will cover.
For families, plan for the child who will walk least. The mine advises against strollers because of the stairs. Check the current family guidance and storage rules. A child being allowed on a route does not tell you whether the full walk will suit that child.
The official practical page lists toilets beside the Daniłowicz Shaft and at points underground. Use the facilities before joining the group if you need to. Follow the guide's instructions underground rather than assuming you can leave and rejoin whenever you want.
Travel from Krakow
The mine's map and access page directs rail passengers to Wieliczka Rynek Kopalnia. It distinguishes the Daniłowicz Shaft for the Tourist Route from the Regis Shaft for the Miners' Route. Use the entrance on your own ticket for the final walk.
Our train from Krakow to Wieliczka guide explains the station and last-mile checks. A rail ticket is a travel purchase, separate from mine entry. Check the current timetable with the rail operator and give yourself room to find the right shaft.
If you use an organised departure, read the pickup instructions closely. “Krakow pickup” does not necessarily mean collection at your hotel door. Ask where the vehicle can stop and how the return works. Compare the meeting point with your room address before you pay.
Choose a route
Choose the Tourist Route if your first priority is the well-known chambers and chapel. Check the standard stair route before deciding it fits. Choose the Miners' Route only after reading the taking part rules and confirming that the activities appeal to everyone in the group. Neither choice removes the need to check the exact entry booking.
Return to the Krakow Old Town guide when arranging the rest of your stay. Keep the mine day separate from the interiors you most want to see in the city. One well-planned visit is more useful than a timetable that relies on every connection going perfectly.

FAQ
Can you visit without a guide?
The official Tourist Route visit always takes place with a guide. You can book entry yourself and arrange your own travel from Krakow, but that is different from walking underground alone. Check the guide language and date in the official ticket system before you make the rest of your travel plan.
Does a train ticket include mine entry?
No. A train ticket pays for the rail trip. Mine entry needs its own booking unless a seller explicitly includes it in a package. Match the entry time with the train you plan to use, then allow time for the walk from Wieliczka Rynek Kopalnia to the correct shaft.
Is the standard route suitable for someone who cannot use stairs?
Don't assume it is. The ordinary Tourist Route includes many stairs. The mine describes a separate prior-booked plan for some visitors with limited mobility. Contact the mine with your needs before paying, and confirm the route you will receive. A lift at the end does not make the standard visit step-free.
Can you take a suitcase underground?
The practical information permits only a small carry-on bag within the stated size limit. Larger bags need a suitable storage plan. Lockers are limited, so space is not guaranteed. Leave your suitcase at your accommodation where possible and check the mine's current luggage rules before choosing a visit between transport connections.
Verdict on Wieliczka Salt Mine
Book the Wieliczka Salt Mine route first, then fit transport around it. Use the Tourist Route for the chambers and chapel, and read the Miners' Route rules if you want practical activities. Check stairs, bag size and guide language before payment. The right entrance matters as much as the right town.
